The benchmarking of the sustainability performance of listed and non-listed real estate funds has increased significantly in the past two to three years. GRESB (Global Real Estate Sustainability Benchmark) alone now captures and assesses the green performance of $2.1 trillion worth of assets and has increased its participant base by 44% since 2012 (covering 637 funds).
Although there is increasing pressure on fund managers to be able to report on the sustainability performance of their portfolios in order to be able to access investors’ funds, there is a lack of clarity over how investors’ expect funds to address sustainability and how they treat benchmark survey results, as well as concern relating to the efficacy of benchmark tools being adopted.
This breakfast seminar will consider current real estate sustainability benchmarks from the perspectives of both investors (including how investors use them and what are they looking for) and fund managers (what they are, what data is required, what do they measure, the overlap (if any) between them and how they may change).
Chair: Phil Clark, Kames Capital
