This year, the AREF Annual Awards are proudly sponsored by Crestbridge.

We are delighted to announce the shortlists & nominations for this years awards:

1. Research Award

We invited all member firms to submit original research, published by their firm or sent to their clients since 1st July 2022. A maximum of three pieces of research per firm could  be considered for submission.

In line with the AREF Research Committees’ long term goals, the winner of the prize is judged upon:

  • Its contribution to the UK institutional real estate funds industry
    • The topical nature of the research and information presented
    • New understanding it brings to an area
    • The degree to which it helps the industry learn

We are delighted to announce the shortlist for Research 2023:

LGIM for the following research: "Ready for Net Zero"


2. Outstanding Fund Achievement

Fund members were invited to put together a submission for their Fund and answer, in under 1000 words, the following question:

What risks have you experienced in your transition plan to Net Zero Carbon?  Provide examples of how you have addressed them. For example, how are you going above and beyond managing climate risks within your fund(s), to actively achieve net-zero ahead of regulation and how you are innovating in this space?

3. Outstanding Individual Contribution

This award is a discretionary award, with nominations selected by the AREF Team.  The Team then hold a vote with the Board and Management Committee to determine the winner.  It is awarded to an individual who has gone the extra mile in terms of their personal involvement in our affairs and their commitment to the evolution of the association and the industry

The nominations for Outstanding Individual Contribution 2023 are:

Sam Carson, CBRE (winner 2021) - who is Deputy Chair of the ESG & Impact Investing Committee, for:  a) His work on the Sustainable Value Report, including chairing the steering committee; writing the report and chairing the launch webinar; b) Chairing the Scope 3 Event in partnership with The BBP; c) for participating in the Social Impact Training and for all his contributions with the ESG Committee throughout the year.

Melville Rodrigues, APEX (winner for 2018) - for a) organising and chairing a number of webinars and events for us this year, including: SDR, DC Pensions and numerous Investor events; b) for his continued support and work on drafting consultations throughout the year; and c) for all for all his contributions with the Public Policy Committee this year, in particular the development of the Reserved Investor Fund (RIF) and on SDR.

Jonathan Bayfield, Aviva Investors - who sits on the Research Committee and the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Taskforce.  For his help in launching and running the AREF Research Award for the last 3 years, including chairing the judging panel; for his participation in events and for his helpful contributions to the DE&I Committee.

Jessica Pilz, Fiera Real Estate - who sits on the ESG & Impact Investing Committee.  For all her help in putting together the ESG Guidelines, which will form part of the Code of Practice.  For her assitance in organising the Scope 3 event with BBP and for all her help with contributions with the ESG Committee throughout the year.

Christopher Austin, Schroders - who Chair's the Tax Committee.  For all his contributions and assitance with the Reserved Investor Fund project, in particular his involvement with HMT; for all his work with the HMRC Consultation response and his continued support and contributions to the Tax Committee.

John Forbes, John Forbes Consulting (winner for 2017) - For his all his work on DB to DC Pensions; SDR and his continued help with drafting consultations throughout the year.

Andy Allen, Savills Investment Management - For his assitance in organising the Residential series events this year.  This included three events on Regulation; Single Family Housing and also Planning as well as his continued contribution with the Residential Working Group throughout the year.


4. Affiliate of the Year

The Affiliate of the Year Award recognises the invaluable support many of our Affiliate member firms provide to the association in a variety of ways. Although this is often manifest through the efforts of one or two individuals, the award is to the firm as a whole, recognising the background support that the individual representatives can draw on. The award is judged on a number of measures, such as significant activity in a key area, hosting of events, or consistent contribution to our affairs over a long period.

The nominations for Affiliate of the Year 2023 are:
 

Carey Olsen - For all their support with sponsoring our first FutureGen Conference this year, allowing us to organise the event and offer it to our FutureGen Network at a discounted cost.  They have sponsored FutureGen events for the last 4-5 years and we are very grateful to them.
 


Travers Smith - for contributions from Emma Pereira and Sarah Walker for their help in pulling together the Advice for Landlords on Commercial Tenant Financial Difficulties Podcast in June and their continued support on the Education & Training Committee and the DE&I Taskforce.
 


Aztec - for proactively suggesting ideas for events and whitepapers as well as their continued support in sponsoring the AREF Annual Dinner for the last 5 years.
 


CBRE - for Sam Carson's help with numerous events and for writing the Sustainable Value report; for Lee Bruce's participation in events and for the PropertyMatch team for their help with the investor event series.


Macfarlanes - For their assistance in organising and hosting the Single Family Housing event earlier this year and their help with the AREF Code of Practice Review this year.


Carbon Intelligence (part of Accenture) - For Oliver Light's assistance with events this year, including his participation in the Scope 3 event and for their sponsorship of the AREF Summer Drinks Reception.

Clare is responsible for all aspects of the planning, development and execution of the marketing strategy for AREF. 

Clare leads on event management, liaising with committees and members to schedule, plan and deliver an effective events calendar for the association.  She also has overall responsibility for brand, as well as the design, development and production of marketing across both digital and offline channels, including the website.
