This morning marked the launch of our new FutureGen Breakfast Series, a new initiative designed to bring together AREF’s FutureGen members with senior leaders across the real estate investment sector.

Our first session took place at BlackRock’s offices in the City and featured Paul Tebbit, Co-Head of Real Estate at BlackRock, as our guest speaker. With over 20 years of experience, Paul oversees BlackRock’s global real estate business and brings a unique perspective shaped by a career that began in law before transitioning into investment and fund management.

Moderated by Jack Quinlan, also of Blackrock and the AREF FutureGen Committee, the session was deliberately small and informal – boardroom style – encouraging an open and honest discussion. Paul shared candid reflections on his career path, the value of diverse experience, and the importance of learning by doing. A chance encounter on the Moorgate escalator this morning with his first boss in the industry set the tone for his talk – a timely reminder of how the people we meet can shape our careers in unexpected ways.

Paul spoke about the transition from real estate law into investment, and the steep learning curve he faced as he developed analytical skills such as financial modelling, along with expertise in asset management and portfolio leadership. He highlighted how a legal background taught him to work through complexity and how his broad experience helped him develop a strategic, big-picture approach to investment.

He also discussed leadership and team dynamics, and how he had to grow into a leadership role that plays to his strengths. He emphasised the value of emotional intelligence and the importance of building trust and complementary partnerships.

The conversation covered everything from operational real estate and global investment strategies to the cultural nuances of leading international teams. Paul spoke openly about the challenges of navigating a shifting market landscape, investor expectations, and the balance between risk and return across different asset classes.

He also shared a memorable anecdote, providing a real insight into the realities of asset management on the ground.

FutureGen attendees had the chance to ask questions directly, ranging from sector-specific queries to leadership lessons. The atmosphere was relaxed, the questions insightful, and the discussion engaging throughout.

We’re grateful to Paul, Jack and the BlackRock team for their warm welcome and generous hosting of this first session. The FutureGen Breakfast Series will continue over the coming months, offering more chances for our FutureGen members to engage directly with industry leaders in a meaningful and informal setting.
